Saving Places Documentary – Cancelled!

Cancelled due to COVID -19

The Sonoma League for Historic Preservation is proud to present Saving Places, an award-winning, one-hour documentary filmed and directed by Sonoma filmmaker Joseph Daniel and powerfully narrated by Sebastopol voice legend Peter Coyote. Saving Places follows the intrepid crews and passionate volunteers of HistoriCorps, a small but mighty non-profit organization, through an entire season of demanding work preserving and restoring over a dozen highly-threatened, historically-significant buildings in remote areas across America. From fire towers, ranger cabins and mining complexes to rural slave dwellings, iconic lodges, and legendary ranches – these structures all tell vivid stories about our past, and if preserved may help teach us about our future.

In its first nine seasons HistoriCorps has engaged 3,300 volunteers to save 281 historic sites in 29 states. But this effort represents only the tip of the iceberg. A recent informal audit by several U.S. agencies puts the number of already decaying, seriously threatened structures at an astonishing 30,000 – most of which will never be preserved due to lack of funding or manpower. It is an inexcusable loss of history. Saving Places combines remarkable cinematography of challenging projects in spectacular wild places with the powerful fervor of ordinary folk on a mission to preserve our heritage. This screening at Sebastiani marks the West Coast premier of Saving Places as it begins a nationwide theatrical tour in historic theaters.
